The Practice...
Get ready for some stupefying news...
Sati- it is the traditional Hindu practice of a widow self immolating herself on her husband's funeral pyre.Sati means virtuous woman.It is believed so by those who practice this that a woman who dies by burning herself on her husbands funeral fire goes directly to heaven,redeeming all her forefathers rotting in hell by this meritorious act.A woman who has committed Sati was worshipped as a goddess.
One finds a large number of satis committed just after the war (like the Johar in Rajasthan (map - topics), when the women must have died to protect their honor from the invading enemies after their men perished in the battlefield.
Many Indian leaders have fought to bring this practice to an end and it did take many large scale social reforms to bring it to an end.Recently an instance of sati had caused a lot of social turmoil.

Ever wondered why they keep using the term "caliber" with relation to a gun? well in case you didn't know,the caliber is the inside diameter of the barrel,a part of the gun.The barrel diameter is generally given in "inches"and in its place the abbreviation "cal"is used.
